Analysis Of The Story Going Back Home - 1000 Words

As people journey through life, they discover many qualities they hold that make them unique and interesting. These qualities differentiate them from others, and help form their identity. In the stories we have read in class, such as â€Å"Going Back Home†, written by Toyomi Igus and Michele Wood, â€Å"Nei Um Lung, Ma?† by May Yee, and â€Å"The Jade Peony† by Wayson Choy, the characters’ hobbies, beliefs, and family roots make them unique and interesting. Due to many factors, including different experiences in life, an individual develops many aspects in their identity that are different from others. Hobbies, which are adopted and changed throughout one’s life, express who an individual is. There are many different reasons as to why people adopt hobbies. It may be a way to pass the time, to express their likes and dislikes, or a way for them to channel their emotions. In the story â€Å"Going Back Home†, the narrator explains how the painter, Michelle Wood, expressed her life and her ancestors’ lives through her art. She created self-portraits to show different aspects of her life, her grandparents’ lives, and a blue musician’s life, utilizing the colours, patterns, and objects to depict their hardships, culture, and opportunities. â€Å"The house and fence represent the foundations of my past. Dorothy Day is one of the most significant activists of Catholic teaching known in American history. It is important to recognize why people congregated to the Catholic religion during the depression in America. Also, how Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin’s The Catholic Worker, promoted peace among the religions and people of America. American Catholics in the 19th century were looking to get along with other Americans and affirm their â€Å"Americanness.† Immigrants arriving in America wanted to show that they were good at participating in American Culture.
